PRK / LASEK
What is PRK?
PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) is a laser technique used to treat patients with refractive errors such as myopia, hypermetropia, and astigmatism.
Which patients are treated with the PRK / LASEK?
The PRK LASEK method can be applied to persons who have reached the age of 18 and whose eye structure is recognized as suitable according to the results of the examination. The procedure can be carried out after the examination or on the day recommended by the doctor.
Which patients are treated with the PRK / LASEK?
- Persons over 18 years of age
- Persons whose corneal thickness is suitable for the Lasek method
- Persons without systemic diseases
- Persons who do not have diseases such as keratoconus, eye pressure, etc.
- Persons who are not pregnant or breastfeeding
What is LASEK?
Lasek is based on the principle of removing the epithelial tissue of the eye with alcohol. After applying the laser, the epithelium returns to its place. Although this two-surface method gives safe results, patients may experience burning, stinging, and watering in the eyes for 2-3 days. On average, vision becomes clear after 1 week to 10 days.
How long does recovery take after PRK / LASEK?
The patient whose laser surgery is completed is asked to wait for about half an hour, and then a follow-up examination is carried out. The use of medications after surgery, as advised by the doctor, is very important to speed up the healing process.
For headaches after surgery, painkillers without a blood-thinning effect may be preferred. Consult your doctor about this situation.
We recommend not driving and resting on the day after surgery. In addition, you should avoid being in a dusty environment, do not rub, scratch, or touch the treated eye, and do not wash your face or bathe during the first 24 hours. The day after the operation, there are no side effects that limit social and business life.
Under-flap lavage may be required if wrinkling is found in the transparent area on the surface of the eye during the next day's follow-up visit, or if there is an under-flap reaction.
Artificial tear drops recommended by your doctor should be used for about 3-6 months after surgery.
What should be considered before laser treatment with PRK?
There is no problem for the patient to eat on the day of treatment.
The patient only:
- Must not wear eye makeup
- Must not use perfume
- Must not take blood-thinning medications
Patients using contact lenses are advised to stop using them 1 week before the examination and PRK surgery if they use soft lenses, and 2 weeks for hard lenses.
Advantages of laser surgery with PRK:
No scar is formed because the corneal flap is not removed.
Patients who do not want to have a scar most often prefer this method.
Since the corneal flap is not removed, there is no destruction of the natural structure of the cornea.
Persons undergoing PRK laser surgery do not feel pain and eye pressure does not increase because no vacuum is used during the operation.
