Ocular Oncology
What is ocular oncology?
The sub-discipline dealing with all types of diagnosis and treatment of tumors of the eye is called “ocular oncology”. Ocular oncology, that is, the science of eye tumors, is a department that requires an additional two years of study after specializing in eye diseases.
“Ocular oncology”, which has developed as a sub-branch of ophthalmology worldwide, is a special sub-branch that requires close collaboration and interdisciplinary collaboration with various medical sciences such as radiation oncology, pathology, radiology, medical oncology, and genetics, as well as with all other areas of ophthalmology. Thus, ocular oncological evaluation is the area in which ophthalmology is most closely intertwined with systems medicine.
In the treatment of intraocular tumors and diseases of the orbit, the most advanced technologies of the world standard are used. The procedures, which are carried out with the help of advanced technological equipment and an experienced medical team in the center under the guidance of an ophthalmologist, are convenient for both the patient and the doctor.
What causes eye tumors?
Although the exact cause of intraocular tumors is unknown, they can develop for many reasons. However, genetic predisposition, excessive exposure to UV rays, aging processes, and other eye diseases can affect tumor development.
Symptoms of eye tumors
Tumors of the eye can occur in different types in different places in the eye. The size of the tumor varies depending on where it originates.
Typically, symptoms include effects such as eye redness, swelling, changes in eye movements, and vision problems. However, if there is a change in eye color or severe headache and eye pain accompanying these symptoms, it is recommended to consult an ophthalmologist.
Treatment of eye tumors
Treatment for eye tumors can vary depending on the type, size, spread of the tumor, and the general health of the patient. The treatment plan is determined jointly by an ophthalmologist and an oncologist.
Treatment of eye tumors:
Surgical intervention
Radiation therapy
Chemotherapy
Focal therapy
Hormone therapy
The treatment plan is determined based on the assessment of the ophthalmologist and the patient's condition. However, after treatment, dispensary observation and control should not be neglected at intervals recommended by the doctor.
Eyelid tumors surgery
Tumors that appear in and around the eyelid are usually benign. In the presence of a non-healing wound on the eyelid, the diagnosis and treatment should be determined by an ophthalmologist. Tumors on the eyelids are usually treated with surgery.
