Ways to Protect Your Eyes in Cold Weather

The eyes also affected by the cold

With the end of autumn, the weather is getting colder and colder and making everyone act more carefully and try to protect themselves from diseases when going out. During this period, serious disorders in the eyes, as well as in the immune system, can occur. Surgeon Dr. Sevgi Tongal shared information about the effects of cold on the eyes and said: “In winter, we heat our houses. However, due to low humidity levels, dry eyes can occur. The best measures against this ailment caused by cold winter winds and low humidity are drinking plenty of water and eating omega-3. Also, watery eyes, which are often seen in the eyes, are a problem that can occur in the eyes due to cold weather. In addition to seasonal allergies, when this problem occurs, which can occur due to strong winds and cold weather, it is very useful to have a rapid eye examination and find out the causes.”

Vision loss may occur

Claiming that in addition to exposure to low light and humidity, results up to a loss of vision can be seen due to direct contact with cold air, Dr. Sevgi Tongal said: “A drop in temperature leads to vasoconstriction around the eyes. This can lead to problems such as double vision or blurry vision. This vision loss is seen in particular in people who spend long time outdoors in cold weather. If you feel that your vision has changed due to cold weather, contact an ophthalmologist immediately and undergo a detailed eye examination. In the absence of timely intervention, such loss of vision can drag on for a long period and lead to more serious consequences in the future.”

These measures work

Surgeon Dr. Sevgi Tongal shared information on measures that can be taken to protect the eyes from the cold and said: “Even if the winter months do not create an ideal climate for the eyes, you can easily take precautions to protect your eyes during this period. In addition to taking precautions against dry eyes with moisturizing eye drops, glare and photosensitivity in the eyes can be prevented by wearing sunglasses that provide UV protection in snowy weather. In addition, the use of glasses instead of lenses during the winter months for people with refractive errors will help protect the eyes from the cold wind as well as maintain eye temperature.”
