Hemorrhage in the eyes results from vasodilation on the surface of the conjunctiva, known as the membranous layer, which covers the anterior surface of the white part of the eye. Very rarely, cracks in these vessels cause hemorrhage. Hemorrhage can occur either in one eye, or, as often happens, in both eyes.
Sometimes eye hemorrhage caused by conditions such as eye fatigue, air-conditioned, extremely hot or cold environments, or prolonged computer use can be a sign of serious conditions such as uveitis, eye pressure, thyroid disease, and rheumatic diseases. Surgeon Dr. Haluk Talu from Dünyagöz Ataköy Hospital spoke about the need to take hemorrhages in the eyes seriously.
THE CAUSE MUST BE INVESTIGATED
Stating that especially hemorrhage in one eye is dangerous, Dr. Talu shared the following information: “Hemorrhage is usually associated with irritation or inflammation, including the conjunctival layer. Dry eyes, allergic reactions, microbial processes, foreign bodies, trauma, sudden eye pressure, intraocular inflammation known as uveitis, inflammation of the eyelash roots, exposure to the sun and ultraviolet rays, and systemic diseases are some of the causes of hemorrhage in the eyes. With rheumatological diseases and diseases of the thyroid gland, hemorrhages in the eyes can also be observed. Accumulations of blood in the eye are located in a specific area and are usually caused by high blood pressure, trauma, and a sudden increase in pressure in the chest, such as during physical exertion. Hemorrhage in the eyes should not be ignored, you should consult a doctor and find out the reasons”.
AN IMPORTANT SYMPTOM IS A PAIN AND WATERY EYE…
Dr. Talu pointed out that eye hemorrhage is an emergency, especially when it is accompanied by pain, watery eyes, and reduced vision quality, and continued: “Treatment is carried out according to the underlying cause. If there is a foreign body, it should be removed; in case of sudden eye pressure, need to reduce pressure and treat; need to carry out the necessary treatment for uveitis and examine for systemic diseases; in case of ultraviolet eye burns, need tı close the eye for a certain period while using appropriate medications. If the cause that causes redness of the eyes is due to a chemical liquid or gas entering the eye, the first thing to do is go to the nearest hospital after rinsing the eye and the area around it with plenty of water for several seconds. Contact lens should be removed and an eye examination should be performed as soon as possible in case of bleeding and pain in contact lens wearers. In cases of allergies, it is recommended to use sunglasses and hats that cover the eyes from sunlight. Treatment of severe allergic reactions should begin as early as possible”.
