INTRACORNEAL RING
What Is Ring Treatment?
Intracorneal ring application may be a good alternative if keratoconus is not advanced in patients who cannot use contact lenses or who do not fit contact lenses. It can be treated by placing intracorneal rings (INTACS, Keraring, Ferrara) into the channels opened within seconds with local anesthesia and Femtosecond Laser applied to the cornea.
What are the intracorneal ring features?
- Transparent,
- Micro size,
- Its thickness changes according to the amount of diopter that needs to be corrected,
- Placed in the cornea tissue of the eye,
- Special apparatus in the form of a half-moon and consists of 2 parts.
These rings are not noticeable from the outside, and most importantly, they do not feel like contact lenses. The rings, which can be removed when deemed appropriate by the doctor, do not leave any permanent traces that will affect the vision since they are not placed in the visual center. Rings with different thickness types are placed according to the degree of keratoconus disease.
When Intacs are placed inside the corneal tissue, it removes the sharpness and camber caused by keratoconus disease, just like a pulley. However, the person's myopia also gets better.
The ring placed inside the eye is transparent and will stay in harmony with your eye tissue without causing any problems for a lifetime, and it can also be removed when desired. After the operation, it is not visible from the outside and its presence in the eye is not felt.
What are the ring types?
There are two types of rings currently in use around the World:
INTACS (Addition Technology): 7 mm diameter hexagonal rings.
KERARING / FERRARA RING (Mediphacos/AJO Company): 5 mm diameter rings with a triangular prism structure.
In Dünyagöz Hospitals, intracorneal ring treatment is used to increase the level of vision for keratoconus. Although there is no publication showing that ring treatment stops the progression of the disease, it has been observed that there is no progress in approximately 88% of patients in the one-year follow-up of patients to whom the ring was applied at Dünyagöz. Therefore, postoperative follow-up of the patients is very important. CCL treatment can be done after ring surgery if any progress is seen.
