The Eyes Give Cancer Away!

A routine eye examination gives you not only the signs of eye-related problems like myopia, hyperopia and strabismus, but also those of many diseases including breast, lung, prostate, blood and ovarian cancer. On February 4, World Cancer Day, Samuray Tuncer, MD, Assoc. Prof. of Dünyagöz Hospital notes that many types of cancer, from lung to breast cancer, can be identified during an eye examination and underlines the importance of early diagnosis.

Being our body’s windows opening to the world, our eyes can warn us about many diseases. The disease of our age, cancer is the most important of such diseases. Assoc. Prof. Samuray Tuncer states that they can easily find out whether a person is at risk of cancer with a general eye and fundus examination, that the eye shows different symptoms, and that many disorders which even the patients themselves are not aware of can be diagnosed thanks to the eyes.

Early diagnosis of cancer with an eye examination

Lesions forming in the fundus allow early diagnosis of the diseases in our body. Assoc. Prof. Samuray Tuncer notes that early diagnosis is one of the most important factors in the treatment of a disease and stresses the significance of eye and fundus examinations: “Many different lesions can occur in the fundus. These lesions can be part of a systemic cancer or an entirely eye-related malignant cancer. All of these tumors may occur at any age. The color, localization and size of the lesions is very significant in diagnosis. While a great majority of the lesions are benign, they can be signs of very serious diseases too. That’s why, most of the time, early diagnosis is of vital importance for the patient.”

Reminding us that many diseases from lung and prostate cancer to lymph and breast cancer can be diagnosed based on ocular findings, Assoc. Prof. Samuray Tuncer recommends that everyone have their eyes examined regularly.
